Sautéed green beans with garlic is a quick and easy way to transform this humble green veggie into a delicious and nourishing meal. Serve it along with rice or any other grain of choice. And it pairs especially well with my gochujang tofu for a wholesome dinner.
Garlic Sauteed Green beans
As simple and unassuming it is to make these sauteed green beans, they make up in flavor and convenience. It is one of those dependable and must have everyday recipes! It has the classic combination of flavors with crispy and golden fried bits of garlic running through the dish along with salty soy sauce and a little sweetness from agave syrup. Truly a balanced flavor sensation!
I think green beans are rather underrated! We tend to use them only on certain occasions, or in a few preparations, when truly they are really versatile and work beautifully with a variety of cuisines and flavor combinations. It may just be one of my favorite green vegetables!
What you need to make these Sauteed Green beans
Here’s what you need to make Sautéed Green Beans with Garlic.
Green Beans: Look for firm, bright green beans and not soft and floppy ones.
Ginger: Important for this recipe, it adds such a depth of flavor
Garlic: Along with ginger and soy sauce in this recipe, it makes the flavor trifecta!
Green Chillies: I use Indian or Thai chillies that tend to be spicy, but you could also serrano or jalapeno peppers depending on your preference of heat level.
Soy Sauce: I’ve used low sodium soy sauce because I can then control how much salt I add to the dish. Substitute with tamari if you prefer a gluten-free alternate.
Agave Syrup: This adds the sweetness and balances the salty, spicy, and green. If you don’t have agave, you could use maple syrup, or any kind of sugar. Just make sure when buying sugar, because not all them are vegan. I recommend sticking to darker brown, or coconut sugar.
Toasted Sesame oil: This is to top the dish with at the end. These pack a serious flavor punch and a little goes a long way. Just a little drizzle in the end adds good fats along with so much flavor!
Toasted sesame seeds: Double down on nuttiness and sesame flavor, this complements the ginger, garlic, soy flavors incredibly well.
Regular Oil: To cook, I recommend using a neutral oil.
How to cook Sauteed Green Beans
Trim the ends of green beans, and remove the strings from the side, if any. Rinse them thoroughly and set aside.
Use a large skillet or a wok and pre-heat oil over medium-high heat. Quickly toss garlic, ginger and chillies then also add the green beans. We’re trying to keep the beans crisp, so all you need is a quick toss. Otherwise they’ll over cook and turn grey & floppy.
Let’s make the sauce for these sauteed green beans:
In a small bowl, add toasted sesame oil, toasted sesame seeds, soy sauce, and agave syrup (or sugar) with a few tablespoons of water. Stir to combine. Pour this sauce over the green beans and thoroughly toss them together. Do not over cook the beans, they should be tender to the bite, yet firm. Sprinkle more sesame seeds over the top just before serving!
