Creamy Vegan Scallion and Basil Sauce
This creamy vegan basil sauce with scallions is epic, if I may say so myself! It’s an easy to put together and no cook vegan sauce; and I mean, literally no cooking. Just add the ingredients, and blend. It makes for a delectable dipping sauce.
When you have incredibly aromatic herbs and veggies, they do all the work in turning what seems like a few basic ingredients into a sauce so tasty that I’ve been eating it with everything!
Typically herb sauces are more pesto or paste like, but this basil sauce with its creaminess is something special. Using a high powered like vitamix helps give it that fluffiness. Another key is the addition of nutritional yeast to lend it’s unique cheesy savory flavor. I’m telling you, this one’s a keeper. It stores in the fridge up to a week in an airtight container.
Over the past week, I’ve used it as a pasta sauce, as a dressing for my salads, a dipping sauce for crispy appetizers, and as a sandwich spread. It truly makes everything better! 🙂
What you need to make this Scallion and Basil Sauce
scallions/green onions: we’ll be using the green part only, so save the white part for another recipe!
fresh basil: we grow our own basil at home. the fresher the basil, the better the sauce.
olive oil: you could use plant based butter or even coconut oil. This is just to add some fat to enhance creaminess.
garlic: because garlic makes everything better
nutritional yeast: most unfortunately named, but it is absolutely delicious! Unlike regular baking yeast, these are inactive. They’re called nutritional because they’re naturally packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein
vegan parmesan: I use Violife or Follow your heart. If you can’t find either, then just use more nutritional yeast and it’ll still be great!
red chilli flakes: adds a little heat. we won’t use too much.
lemon juice: makes all the other flavors shine better. brightens the whole sauce
salt & pepper of course
What is Nutritional yeast?
Unlike regular baking yeast, these are inactive. Most unfortunately named, but it is absolutely delicious! They’re called nutritional because they’re naturally packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein.
They contain all nine essential amino acids making it a complete protein source. Also in my opinion, the tastiest source of fiber. They’re also naturally vegan and gluten-free!
Its naturally “cheesy” and nutty flavor makes it a great substitute for cheese. Whether it’s for a crispy crust, added to dips, or topping your salads and soups. They can be consumed cooked or uncooked. Add them to your tofu scramble, veggie stir fry, queso, dips or just use them like parmesan, to crust things, or add to soups and salads. The options are endless!

How to make Creamy Vegan Scallion and Basil Sauce
When I said this is the easiest basil sauce you’ve made, I wasn’t kidding. It is no cook and takes 5 minutes to make!
Place all the ingredients in a blender. Pulse a few times first. Then start blending on a lower speed, slowly increasing it to high. Blend until smooth and it’s done! Have you ever made anything simpler? And it tastes like a million bucks, I promise.
This basil sauce is great to toss in with pasta (that recipe is coming up next!) or use as a dipping sauce for all fried things and veggies. I also often use them as a burger sauce, sandwich spread or taco sauce. The possibilities are truly endless!
